4 Tools for Uterine Alignment ~ How to Keep It Together

For women, keeping it all together is a giant feat! You may think it is the art of multitasking and starts with a list. It actually starts with the placement of the uterus!
Don Elijio Panti used to say, "The uterus is the woman's center. If her uterus is not in proper position and good health, nothing in her life will be right."
When your uterus is centered you are more balance both emotionally and physically. And when it's out of alignment, a you can experience a myriad of symptoms including painful menstruation, painful intercourse, uncomfortable pregnancy, and more.
In other posts, I discuss ways to take care of your uterus and the importance of uterine alignment.
These include: Maya Abdominal Massage& Uterine Self-Care.
In this post I offer another tool: the faja, a key to keeping the uterus centered.

The Faja Supports the Uterus

This is a "faja." For those of you who know Spanish, it means belt.
In this case, it's actually a long piece of cloth about 7 feet long by 10 inches wide.
The purpose of the faja is to support the uterus & is useful in two situations:

The purpose of the faja is to support the uterus & is useful in two situations:
- for a woman who needs to hold her uterus in place.
- for a pregnant woman.
Why Would You Need a Faja?
There are ten ligaments that hold the uterus in place. Some women have loose ligaments which compromise the uterus's ability to stay centered. Often a gynocologist will tell a woman the placement of her uterus. A uterus can be prolapsed, anteriorlapse, retroflex. A bladder can also be prolapsed. In layman's terms this means a uterus a can low, to the left or to the right, falling forwards or falling backwards.
If this is you, then the first step in alignment is seeing a Maya Abdominal Massage practitioner. The practitioner can externally feel the placement of the uterus and help re-align it. Once a practitioner aligns the organ, you can use a faja to help the uterus stay in place.

What to Avoid While Re-Centering Your Uterus
There are certain activities that can aggravate the condition and encourage the uterus to fall out of place. These include:
- running on hard pavement repeatedly.
- wearing high heeled shoes.
- walking barefoot on wet grass in the morning.
The Faja in Pregnancy

In the last couple months of pregnancy the faja can be especially helpful. During pregnancy the fetus can get very heavy especially when a mother is carrying a big baby, twins or more. The faja supports the weight in the uterus without putting pressure on the abdomen. Besides support, the faja helps keep the baby or babies in place.
Why is alignment important?
If a woman gets pregnant when her uterus isn't aligned, the fetus can grow in an uncentered uterus. Again the post on Maya Abdominal Massage makes the point how preventative care in aligning the uterus before conception and during pregnancy is very valuable for the health of the mother and fetus. Comfort and safety are increased with Maya Abdominal Massage and complimentary Self-Care Massage.
When the uterus is centered and the fetus grows in this well positioned home, success and ease are more likely. These points were and still are very crucial for women in indigenous cultures, who couldn't risk complications.
If the uterus wasn't centered at the time of conception, the faja helps nurture that alignment. It's never safe to move a baby in the womb, but gently massaging the uterus and baby helps everything find a more comfortable place. Wearing the faja to maintain this position is very therapeutic. Many women have found this combination treatment helps remove any issues and go on to have a peaceful, natural birth.

How to Wrap the Faja
It's important that the fabric doesn't bunch up. You want a smooth wrap all the way around. Here's how:
- Start by holding one end close to the body and wrap the length around the lower abdomen so the uterus is being gently hugged by the fabric.
- Don't tie a knot when you run out of fabric, rather tuck the loose end in.
- If you know which way your uterus tends to fall out of alignment, it can be helpful to position the faja to end on that side, thus creating a slight gather of fabric that will encourage the uterus towards center.
