Essential Oils to Boost Your Self-Care

Are you super busy and need fast fixes? Well, Essential Oils are the quickest Self-Care tool other than a deep breath. Wait, you take a deep breath every time you smell an oil! I just open a bottle of Joy Essential Oil Blend, and I am on the road to recovery within seconds!
But this isn't where I started - at first I just liked the scents. I made body butters and would put essential oils in them because it made them smell amazing. I didn't even know about the therapeutic benefits. The more I used them the more I began to fall in love with them. I was already a beginner herbalist, so I started researching all the blessed effects the essential oils hold!

What is an Essential Oil?
To put it simply, each plant has a smell. Through the distillation process, this scent is extracted and bottled. It's as simple as that. However, unless you own a distiller, it's not the kind of thing you can make at home like tinctures or herbal infusions.
There are also many qualities or grades of essential oils; they are not all created equally. Like some things, often the higher the quality the more expensive the product. I only use high-grade essential oils because I like them to be multipurpose: internal and external applications as well as diffusing it in the air (which is going into my lung, so still an internal application) and even in cleaning.

How to Get Quality Essential Oils from Young Living:
I value quality, and if that means I have to pay more I will. I use Young Living Essential Oils because I trust their quality and Purity. One way that I balance out the price is I buy the oils wholesale. Other people buy in bulk or even become a distributor. There is even an Essential Rewards Program with Young Living. This is where you order a certain amount every months, and you accrue points. Then you can cash in your points for FREE OILS!

7 Ways to Use Essential Oils
1. Inhalation
Depending on the oil, you can put a drop or two directly into your palm, rub them together, and inhale. Then place this wherever you feel inclined. Hot spots are: neck, feet, temples, and lymph nodes.
2. In a Carrier Oil
You can apply a drop of essential Oil in a carrier oil or even lotion especially when giving a massage or applying it on children.
3. Directly to the Skin
For injured muscles, you can put it directly on the injury.
4. Diffusing Essential Oils in the Air
I love diffusing essential oils into a room because it does everything from cleansing to purifying to game changing!
5. Internally
You can also drink some oils. For example, when a cold is coming on Thieves oil in milk or tea is recommended.
6. Essential Oil Steams
I also use essential oils to make a steam. Here's How to Do a Sinus Steam.
7. In the Bathtub
A very common way to use them is in the bath. Because they are concentrated make sure to put a few drops in the running water so it disperses and doesn't burn your skin.
Really there are a myriad of options. Get creative and have fun!

Essential Oils in a Mister Bottle

Another easy and inexpensive option is putting essential oils in a spray bottle with water. This is a form of diffusing the oils without the diffuser. It's also a great method when you are on the go or want to spray something directly, like linens or a person.
How I make it:
I start with a small amount of vegetable glycerin and then add Young Living Essential Oil to it. Oil doesn't evenly distribute into the water. By putting the glycerin in first the Essential Oils then disperse into the whole bottle.
You can buy a spray bottle with Essential Oil blend all ready to go and add your own essential oils when it becomes empty.

Essential Oils for Children

Not all essential oils are safe for children. With that being said, my two year old LOVES the ones that are.
Lavender Essential Oil is the safest oil for babies. It's still wise to keep all baby products unscented for the first year or so.
Essential Oils for Sickness
I only started using Lavender Oil with my son when he got his first cold. There isn't much you can give a baby under 1, but Lavender is safe on the feet. I also put it on my son's lymph nodes to help clear out an infection.
As he got a bit older, he also caught his second illness - the Flu. I needed a heavy hitter and used Thieves Oil on his feet and lymph (diluted). Thieves Oil is a blend of Clove, Rosemary, Eucalyptus, Lemon, and Cinnamon. It's super powerful stuff and worthy of it's own blog post!
Remember that funny SNL skit "It's a Floor Wax and a Dessert Topping?" Well, that's how I feel about Thieves Oil. I put it in my tea when I feel sick as well as in my household cleaner to kill germs! SNL was on to something:) Thieves Oil is a must have!
The rest of the time, my son is super healthy, but that doesn't mean we don't use Essential Oils...

Essential Oils in Health

Once Mosiah turned 2, I introduced more Essential Oils into our routine. He loves to smell them and even choose which one he wants in a particular moment.
Two of his favorite blends are Peace and Calming (Tangerine, Orange, Ylang Ylang, Patchouli, and Blue Tansy) and Valor (Spruce, Rosewood, Blue Tansy and Frankincense).
We use the Peace and Calming before errands and bedtime.

Essential Oils with or after Bath Time

We LOVE to use Essential Oils around bath time!
My son uses Valor after a bath to help him get grounded. He also loves it if he falls down and gets injured.
I could go on and on, but I will keep it at this:
Essential Oils can effectively shift children's behaviors and moods in seconds.
Try it and share a comment. Or if you are an avid user with your children, let me know what your favorites are!

My Top Favorites

This is a challenging list to come up with, but I will stick to my most favorites. I know 15 years ago I would have paid for this knowledge.
My favorite straight oils are:
Lavender (for everywhere), Elemi (for blemishes on my face), Frankincense (for when I sit down to write), Ginger (for an upset stomach), Cedarwood (the scent is like a walk in the forest) and Rosemary (for my hair).
My favorite Young Living blends of oils are: Surrender, Joy,Thieves, Peace and Calming, Harmony, Release, Valor, and Abundance.
Choosing the right oil for any given moment is extremely personal. It's fun to get a kit and start to explore the inner emotional world with oils. Using the oils in front of children is crucial because it sets the foundation for their own self-care rituals.
Plus, it just smells good!

Raindrop Therapy

As a massage therapist, I give a Raindrop Therapy Session, which includes: Valor, Oregano, Thyme, Basil, Wintergreen, Cypress, Marjoram, Pepper (optional), Aroma Siez, White Angelica (optional) and Peppermint. These oils are dripped directly onto the client's back and then worked in. Hot towels and steam are added to encourage the process. This bodywork healing is extremely amazing and really pushes things out of the body. Look in your area for a practitioner who offers this treatment if you are interested in the experience.
As you can see Essential Oils are versatile. To truly nurture yourself naturally you need to incorporate essential oils. If you have them, but they are sitting on the shelf, dust them off and recalibrate. It's deeply healing!
